There are only a few examples of actors that have reached a certain level in cinematography and have decided to put an end to their careers at an age that would have allowed them many more roles. It is also the case of Phoebe Cates that gave up her acting career in 1994, at the age of 31, after only twelve years from her debut.
In 1984, while she was a young fashion model without too much success, Phoebe Cates received the offer of starring in a movie called "Fast Times at Ridgemont High". She played the role of a popular girl and she was appreciated for a topless scene that she did without inhibition. Her next role was in a movie called "Paradise" that copied a lot from the classic "The Blue Lagoon". Again, although she was only 17 at that time, she did a couple of nude scenes that made her very popular among the ones that saw the movie. Phoebe's next movies were not as successful as the first two, receiving a lot of roles in children oriented productions. Probably the most important role she had in that period was the one in "Gremlins". Phoebe Cates was born on July 16, 1963 in New York as the daughter of Lily and Joseph Cates. Her father Joseph and her uncle were movie directors, while her stepfather was a horse breeder. Phoebe attended courses at the Professional Children's School from New York and developed a passion for ballet. Unfortunately, she had to give up ballet courses from the School of American Ballet in 1977 because of a severe knee injury. While she was a teenager, Phoebe Cates was fashion model, without grand success although she had an important appearance in the "Seventeen" magazine. She focused her career on acting and became quite popular in 1982 for her role in the Hollywood production "Fast Times at Ridgemont High". One of the key elements of her appearance was a topless scene that was very appreciated. A role in "Paradise" followed, a movie inspired from the classic "The Blue Lagoon". Again, the nude scenes in which Phoebe starred were quite an attraction for the public. Phoebe continued to obtain roles in movies that were not very important, the exception being the role from "Gremlins" in 1984. In 1989, she met her actual husband, Kevin Kline, while auditioning for a role.
